2022 STS Annual Meeting Online: Perioperative Neurological Complications Associated with Cardiac Surgery and Critical Care

Neurologic complications especially neurocognitive (e.g., delirium and cognitive dysfunction) and neurovascular (e.g. stroke) are among the most feared and devastating outcomes following cardiac surgery. This session will update current understanding regarding the incidence of, risks for, and outcomes associated with neurological complications including critical discussion regarding emerging clinical evidence and future directions of research.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate and understanding of the pathobiology of neurological injury in cardiac surgery/intensive care.
  • Define the incidence and prognostic significance of neurological complications and recognize the challenges to diagnosing and managing such complications in the cardiac surgical/intensive care setting.
  • Describe the technical surgical/interventional and mechanical support considerations that have risk implications for cardiac surgical/intensive care patients.
  • Demonstrate an understanding for current and emerging evidence for neuroprotection and strategies for preventing neurological injury in cardiac surgery.
