- Mycobacterium avium complex is a nontuberculous mycobacterial infection
- Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium intracellulare, and Mycobacterium chimaera
- Usually treated with three-drug regimens
- Inhaled agents can be used for treatment failure
- Treatment continued until cultures are negative for at least 12 months
- Drug related toxicities can occur
- Surgical resection is considered in patients with cavitary disease, treatment failure, and resistant infections. Consider flap coverage of the bronchial stump.
